This is a work-in-progress, a painting that has been chased all over the place over the past year. The main problem is that the City of Everett neglects to trim back the foreground, and I keep having to shift my point-of-view to see my subject. By summer's end I suspect that the Snohomish River will no longer be visible, and I'll just be painting a profusion of jungle à la Le Douanier Rousseau.
I was accompanied for this session by students Bin Li and Liz Talley. The weather was too darn hot, and we had to tear down early to avoid getting heatstroke. The session photograph is from a year ago, when the painting was started. It shows Bin Li and Lee Henrickson at their easels.
There is always the possibility that by chasing a scene's changes, it will escape from me entirely. I'm reminded of Antonio López García's basement of failures in Victor Erice's "The Quince Tree Sun." Nature inspires, but she never cooperates.
